Let's be honest about something the discourse won't say out loud.

Not everyone opting out of the promotion is doing it for the reasons in the articles. Some of you genuinely don't want the management grind, and fair enough, that's a real choice and it's yours. But some of you are calling it "conscious unbossing" because it sounds better than "I'm scared of the room." Those are two different things, and only you know which one you actually are.

If it's the first one, keep going, no notes. If it's the second one, I need you to hear this.

You don't need permission to want it.

Climbing the ladder is not a personality flaw you have to apologise for because the internet decided ambition is cringe this year. Ambition isn't the thing that's wrong with you. It's the thing you keep talking yourself out of, because wanting something loudly and not getting it feels worse than never trying. That's fear wearing a trend name so it doesn't have to admit what it is.

And if the room you're trying to get into is full of men who've never once had to wonder whether they belonged there: good. Walk in anyway. Nobody handed them permission either, they just didn't wait for it. You don't need the room to be built for you before you're allowed to run it.

The numbers back this up if you want them. 80% of women still say they want the next promotion. That part isn't broken. What's broken is how many of us talk ourselves down the second it gets uncomfortable, then find a trend name to make the retreat sound like a decision.

Here's what I actually want you to do instead. Stop performing "I've let go of ambition" if what's true is you haven't, you've just gone quiet about it because quiet feels safer. It isn't safer. It's just slower, and it costs you the exact years you'll want back later.

Go for the promotion. Say it out loud in the meeting. Take the room that wasn't built for you and make it yours anyway.

Nobody's coming to hand you the confidence first. Put on the jacket that makes you feel like you already have it, and go take the thing you actually want.
